HPE announces a new server for artificial intelligence systems

HPE has started shipping its Edgeline EL8000 server system for edge computing. The novelty is equipped with a specialized chip Cloud AI100 to accelerate the work of artificial intelligence (AI) programs, produced by Qualcomm Corporation.

HPE Edgeline EL8000 is a so-called blade system with a 5U chassis, in which up to four single- or dual-socket blade servers with Intel Xeon Scalable processors can be installed. All of them are combined into a cluster using two redundant switches built into the chassis.

HPE is also releasing a dual-unit modification of the Edgeline EL8000t, which is equipped with only two blades.Cloud AI100 in the Edgeline EL8000 uses a PCI Express Gen4 expansion card form factor and consumes about 75 watts. According to HPE, this solution can be used in industry for product quality control, in finance for fraud detection, for robotics and warehouse inventory, in security systems, in retail to prevent loss of goods, as well as for performing Internet of Things (IoT) applications and for edge AI computing such as computer vision and natural language processing. The use of Cloud AI100 will allow Edgeline EL8000 systems installed at the edge of the corporate network to process much more data at a fraction of the cost.
