Google Workspace is introducing a series of updates focused on using artificial intelligence to simplify research, data analysis, and overall team productivity. Key innovations include:
Improved data analysis using AI in Google Sheets:
Deeper Insights: Gemini integration in Sheets now allows you to go beyond basic insights and dive deeper into your data. AI can uncover more complex trends, patterns, and correlations between different variables in your spreadsheets thanks to improved code generation capabilities.
Advanced visualizations: In addition to standard charts, AI can generate more complex visualization types, such as heatmaps, to better represent analytical findings.
Practical applications: For example, marketers can ask AI to analyze channel performance by conversion rate and get visualized reports. Business owners can forecast cash flow, and financial analysts can detect anomalies in inventory levels to prevent logistics or demand problems.
Performance improvements: In addition to analytics, Sheets has received significant speedups: copying data between tables is up to 50% faster, the filter menu for large datasets loads 50% faster, and opening existing tables is up to 30% faster.
NotebookLM as the main Workspace service:
Personalized Research Assistant: NotebookLM is an AI tool designed to accelerate learning and idea generation based on your own sources. It works with documents, PDFs, content from Google Drive, videos, and audio recordings provided by the user or organization.
Knowledge centralization: It becomes an expert in the information provided, allowing employees to quickly find what they need, generate ideas, and create a centralized knowledge hub.
Audio formats: NotebookLM can create audio reviews or podcast-like conversations with AI hosts that highlight key points from sources, allowing you to absorb information even on the go.
Integration and Security: NotebookLM and NotebookLM Plus are now core services for Workspace Business and Enterprise customers. This means that all uploaded sources and notebook work are protected by the same security and enterprise-level data protection standards as other Workspace applications, and are subject to the same terms of service and technical support.
Search for information in a video on Google Drive:
Video transcripts: In addition to automatic subtitles, Google Drive now generates full text transcripts (transcriptions) for uploaded videos.
Search by content: Users can view this transcription in a sidebar next to the video player. The text that is currently being spoken is highlighted. Most importantly, you can search for keywords or phrases directly within the transcript text.
Convenience: This makes it much easier to find specific moments in long videos, jump to the part you want, or just keep track of the content without having to watch the entire video.
Gemini Deep Research for in-depth research:
Research Automation: This feature, available in the Gemini app, is designed to perform complex, multi-step research. It helps you understand new or complex topics, saving you hours of work.
How it works: The user asks for a topic. Gemini suggests a research plan (which can be edited) that starts with a general context and gradually digs into the details. It then uses Google’s search algorithm to find high-quality, reliable sources on the web, constantly refining the search queries as new information becomes available.
Report and interactivity: The result is a comprehensive, structured report with citations to the sources used. The report can be exported (e.g. to Google Docs). The user can ask Gemini clarifying questions about the information found, ask to delve into certain aspects, or initiate additional searches.
Applications: Ideal for researching industry trends, analyzing the competitive landscape, preparing for client meetings, or even helping educators plan curriculum.
