What is Google Maps Platform and how does this solution help businesses?

Google Maps Platform

Google Maps API, officially known as Google Maps Platform, is a comprehensive platform that gives developers access to a large database of geographic data and functionality of Google Maps. The main goal of the platform is to allow companies to integrate these capabilities directly into their websites and mobile applications. This is not just embedding a static image, but adding dynamic, interactive maps with up-to-date data that is updated in real time. The platform is part of the Google Cloud ecosystem.

Key features and APIs:

Google Maps Platform organizes its tools (APIs) into four main categories:

  • Maps: Provides the ability to display maps of the world. This includes the Maps Static API for simple map images and the powerful Maps JavaScript API, which allows you to create highly interactive and customizable maps with markers, layers, and controls.
  • Routes: Helps users find the best routes. The Directions API allows you to plot routes between multiple points, taking traffic into account, and provides turn-by-turn directions, distance calculations, and estimated travel times.
  • Places: Provides access to Google’s vast database of millions of places around the world (points of interest – POIs), including names, addresses, ratings, reviews, photos, and more. The Places API allows you to search for places, get detailed information about them, and use autocomplete when entering addresses.
  • Environment: A newer category of API that provides environmental data, such as solar potential for rooftops (Solar API), air quality (Air Quality API), and pollen concentrations (Pollen API).

Among the popular Google Maps API services:

  • Maps Static API – allows you to embed static maps into websites.
  • Maps JavaScript API – provides interactivity and customization of maps.
  • Places API – provides data about points of interest (POI).
  • Directions API – helps you get directions.
  • Geocoding API – converts addresses to coordinates and vice versa.
  • Geolocation API – determines the location of users.

These APIs can be combined to create complex solutions, such as optimizing routes in logistics, displaying the nearest branches on a map for customers, visualizing geo-based data, or providing navigation services in travel apps. The platform also supports overlaying custom data (markers, lines, polygons) and event handling (clicks, map movement).

Getting started, API key and pricing:

To use any API with Google Maps Platform, you need an API key. This is a unique identifier that authenticates requests from your application to Google services.

  • Getting a key: The key is generated through the Google Cloud Platform console. The sign-up process requires a Google Account and payment information (bank card) even if you plan to use only the free limits.
  • Pricing: Google Maps Platform operates on a pay-as-you-go model, but it does provide a significant monthly free credit for many services (for example, up to 10,000 requests per month for certain APIs). You are only charged after you exceed these free limits. The cost depends on the specific API and the amount of usage. It is recommended to monitor your costs in the Google Cloud console.
  • Key security: It is important to protect your API key to prevent unauthorized use. Google recommends restricting the key to specific websites, IP addresses, or mobile applications.

Website integration:

The integration method depends on your site’s technology:

  • CMS and website builders: Platforms like Shopify may have built-in support for Google Maps, where you just need to paste in the API key you received. Others, like WordPress, may require third-party plugins.
  • Custom development: If you are building a site from scratch or the platform does not have native support, integration is done using code (usually JavaScript) according to the detailed Google Maps Platform documentation. Google provides tutorials, for example, on how to get started with the Maps JavaScript API.

Working with a Google Cloud partner:

For companies that need help implementing, integrating, or optimizing the use of Google Maps Platform, there are certified Google Cloud partners (e.g. Wise IT):

  • Expertise: Partners help you save time, avoid setup errors, and quickly implement the necessary functionality.
  • Convenient payment: They provide the ability to pay for Google Cloud services via non-cash payment from a legal entity (in hryvnia or sometimes in cryptocurrency), which simplifies accounting.
  • Support and training: They offer consultations, team training, and operational technical support.
