Business growth with seamless migration to Google Cloud

In today’s hybrid office environments, it can be difficult to know where your most valuable, sensitive content is, who has access to it, and how people are using it. That’s why Egnyte  focuses on making it easy for IT teams to manage and control the full spectrum of content risks, from accidental data deletion to privacy compliance.

I was previously an Egnyte customer prior to joining the team, so I have experienced first-hand the transformative impact Egnyte can have on a company. Because data is fundamental to the company’s success, we take the trust of our 18,000 customers very seriously. There is no room for error in a cloud management platform, which means that the technology providers we work with cannot fail either. That’s why we work with Google Cloud.

Since Egnyte was founded in 2007, we have been providing our services to customers 24/7. We do this by managing our own data centers: two in the US and one in Europe. But as the company continued to grow steadily, owning and managing these data centers became unsustainable. It takes a huge amount of work from the data center to manage everything we need. Not only have we continually built, maintained and paid for all of this infrastructure, but we have also continually expanded our data centers to accommodate the growth of our business. This created an endless pipeline problem as we had to predict how many companies we were going to win over the next 12-18 months. What if we planned to grow the business by 20% and instead grew by 25%?

We knew that being limited to our own data centers would negatively impact our business, so we looked for alternatives. To gain scalability and introduce another layer of reliability to our business, we decided to partner with a reputable cloud provider that could reliably back up our data. We tested the offerings of each cloud service provider and found that Google was the winner in every category we analyzed.

One such category is network coverage. With its own transoceanic fiber, with points of presence in all the markets where we currently do business, as well as the markets where we intend to do business one day, the Google network is second to none. Another important criterion for us was flexibility in our product offering so that we could better consider the financial risks of this large-scale data migration. For a while, we had to pay for both our new cloud infrastructure and our old on-premises infrastructure because they overlapped during the migration, but Google Cloud has made this planning easier for us.

By December 2021, we have completed the full transition to Google Cloud. This significant migration was completed gradually and without interruption to our services. Our close collaboration with the Google Cloud team is one of the main reasons we have completed this so successfully. Google Cloud was able to anticipate some of the challenges we were likely to face and helped us overcome them.

We were able to close our last data center in February 2022 and the positive changes for the business are already evident. Capacity planning, which used to be our biggest local problem, is now a thing of the past. The ability to create new resources in Google Cloud means that we no longer need to buy additional resources a year in advance and wait for them to be delivered.

Using Google Cloud means we no longer rely on legacy infrastructure, which is a very limiting factor when you’re designing and building a complex platform like Egnyte. Our entire platform now always runs on the latest storage, processing, networking and services available on Google Cloud.

In addition, our infrastructure includes services such as Cloud SQL , Cloud Bigtable , BigQuery , Dataflow , Pub/Sub and Memorystore for Redis which means we no longer need to build services from scratch or buy, install and embed them into the product and company workflow. There is a long list of Google cloud services that have greatly simplified our processes and now support our flagship products Egnyte Collaborate and Secure and Govern.

Looking forward, we will continue to take advantage of Google Cloud. Our migration affected not only our business, but also our customers. We can offer even higher reliability and faster scalability to our customers when they need our platform to protect and manage critical content in any cloud or any application, anywhere in the world. We look forward to seeing what happens next.
