Company: Natali Healthcare Solutions is a leading healthcare and support services company in Israel with over 30 years of experience and expertise. The company offers a wide range of medical and non-medical services, including help and alarm buttons, telemedicine, cardiology services, home visits, ambulance services, care and nursing, community services, etc.

Results:
  • Reduces recovery point objective (RPO) and target time objective (RTO) for critical healthcare systems.
  • Provides fast data recovery – from individual files to entire virtual machines.
  • Optimizes backup processes, allowing a lean team to manage an evolving environment.

Business challenge

Natali Healthcare Solutions is the largest provider of emergency and medical call centers in Israel. The organization’s call center is open 24 hours a day, staffed by experienced medical personnel who offer immediate consultation as well as emergency assistance through a fleet of resuscitation vehicles and doctors.

Ofir Levy, CIO of Natali Healthcare Solutions, said: “Digital technology is an integral part of our services. For example, we use wearables and portable help and panic buttons so that our subscribers can always reach our medical experts wherever they are. These capabilities depend on our digital solutions, which means that high availability is crucial.”

Every day, Natali handles thousands of incoming calls to its call centers through a virtual private branch exchange (PBX) phone system that runs in its primary on-premises data center. The company also hosts a number of other critical systems at the primary location, including a customer relationship management (CRM) platform and integration technologies for distress and panic buttons.

«If our production systems stop working, we will not be able to provide remote medical care to our subscribers,” Levy said. “To protect the health and well-being of our customers, it is critical that we have highly effective business continuity and data protection capabilities».

Natalie manages critical and core systems using on-premises data centers as well as cloud platforms. Approximately 95% of the company’s IT systems are virtualized, running on hundreds of VMware virtual machines (VMs) hosted on dozens of bare metal servers.

«We recently embarked on a project to improve our data protection capabilities,” said Levy. “We decided to replace the technology we were using to replicate data between our primary data center and disaster recovery site and create regular disk and tape backups to a third offsite location for added security. The goal was to provide a lower recovery time objective [RTO] and point-in-time objective [RPO] for the virtual machines hosting our mission-critical systems. At the same time, we wanted the backup processes to be simple and easy to manage».

Veeam solutions

After a thorough evaluation process, Natalie selected Veeam® Backup & Replication™ and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to support her new data protection environment.

«When we finished designing the new disaster recovery environment, Veeam was an easy choice,” said Levy. “We had used Veeam before on a small scale, so we knew it would provide a complete solution for all our needs and that VMware data replication would be seamless. When we consulted peers and colleagues about the Veeam solution, everyone spoke very highly of it, which gave us the confidence to move forward».

Working together with Veeam and a local Veeam business partner, Natalie deployed the latest version of Veeam Backup & Replication with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 into production.

«Veeam provides us with a one-stop shop for backup and replication,” said Levy. “Veeam’s solution is completely hardware-independent, so there was no problem deploying to our new backup infrastructure, which includes new servers and storage, as well as enhanced tape libraries with faster write speeds. With Veeam, we encrypt all data we send to tape, which helps ensure that sensitive medical information is always safe, even if it is stored off-site».

Today, Natalie uses the Veeam solution to fully protect her environment, including critical systems. The solution automatically sends regular snapshot backups to the company’s disaster recovery site, and data is regularly backed up to internal and external tapes as an additional layer of protection.

«By creating high availability clusters, we can provide instant failover from our primary data center to our secondary site,” Levy said. “For the virtual machines that we cannot configure as a cluster, Veeam offers us extremely low RTO and RPO. As a result, we achieved our goal of providing highly resilient business continuity planning capabilities for our mission-critical IT environment.».

Natali is always looking for more effective ways to protect vital healthcare services. The organization is exploring the possibility of activating immutable backups – preventing data backups from being altered – to reduce the risk of ransomware attacks.

«Our interaction with Veeam has been a very positive experience,” said Levy. “It was clear from the start that the Veeam technical sales representative really cared about our success, and we knew we could always pick up the phone whenever we had a question. Thousands of subscribers rely on Natalie’s digital systems to alert us to emergencies, so looking after these systems is a huge responsibility. Veeam definitely helps me sleep easier at night because I know that our IT platforms are always protected».

Results

  • Reduces recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO) for critical healthcare systems.
Unplanned downtime can have a catastrophic impact on Natalie’s healthcare services. With Veeam, the company has reduced RPO and RTO, helping to reduce the risk of service interruptions.
  • Provides fast data recovery – from individual files to entire virtual machines
«We run regular tests to make sure we can restore our virtual machine backups,” Levy said. “In several cases, we have re-deployed entire virtual machines from backups to check for issues before updating software and deploying Windows patches, which has saved us a lot of downtime».
  • Optimizes backup processes, allowing the economic team to manage the evolving environment
«The main advantage of Veeam solutions is that they allow us to protect our environment with minimal manual effort,” said Levy. “Once we set up a backup job, there is no need to touch it. As a result, we can manage our growing IT landscape without increasing our IT staff».
